The history of Voice dialogue:
Hal and Sidra Stone are the inventors of Voice dialogue in which they referred to it as psychology of selves. They first created this concept in the 1970s and this method of therapy has since been adopted by many people as a form of treatment and healing for their inner selves.
In a voice dialogue session, you literally allow your sub-personalities to speak for themselves.
The framework of this theory borders on the crux that each personality is like a person with its own beliefs, behaviors, rules, and characteristics. And that each self plays a significant role in protecting an individual.
In order to understand yourself, picture yourself as a bus full of selves. See yourself as the driver of the bus with the passengers who own their voices dictating where to go. Your sub-personalities will tell you how to drive. Some personalities are more vocal than others and if allowed will take control of the bus.
When personalities take over it leads to an unconscious and automatic way of acting or reacting. You feel as if you have limited freedom and restricted choices.
Types of sub-personalities
There are only two types of sub-personalities:
- Primary selves
These are dominant selves that determine an individual’s personality and will, therefore, control and influence the choices the individual makes. They are also referred to as operating ego.
- Disowned selves
In contrast, disowned selves are dormant personalities believed to be equal to primary selves despite having opposing values.
Facilitators of voice dialogues should, therefore, ensure that they treat each self with respect during a session.
How voice dialogue works:
In order to get the best from voice therapy, you need to separate your primary self and enter a center space separate from your operating ego. At the center space, you will be able to observe the primary self and the disowned self. While here you evaluate experiences of both selves improving your ability to make centered decisions and conscious choices. This process is called the Aware Ego Process.
A facilitator will invite each self to speak about life. The facilitator encourages each self to provide information about their views and should never attempt to intervene or negotiate with any of the selves.
This means a facilitator will not change the way selves view life or attempt to make selves agree to something. The facilitator can, however, ask questions as this is part of the process to gather more information on different selves.
Most facilitators will give space to each self in the room or a separate chair. You will be required to move to a separate chair or a different space whenever different selves are speaking. This method helps in the understanding of individual selves. Space is also created for your Aware Ego to help in the process of evaluating and acting on what is revealed.
Voice dialogue training is helpful to people suffering from post-traumatic stress, communication issues, and stress. It also tackles relationship issues, whether romantic, family or professional to allow an individual to make a conscious life choice.
